Black Soldier Fly Biowaste Processing

The DOWN project aims to revolutionize waste management practices on farms by harnessing the potential of insects to upcycle organic waste into valuable resources. Organic waste generated on farms presents both environmental and economic challenges, including soil degradation, nutrient loss, and disposal costs. By integrating innovative strategies and technologies, DOWN seeks to address these challenges while promoting sustainability and resilience in agricultural systems.

The project implemented a small scale organic waste recycling facility at Unnat Krishi Abhiyan Parishad Samiti (UKAP), Sagar Madhya Pradesh. It uses the Black Soldier Fly (BSF), Superworm and native earthworm species Lampito mauritii for waste treatment.

The grown larva of BSF and superworms are harvested and feed to fish or poultry while the remaining residues is used as compost. Based on the experience from the operating the small scale pilot facility (10 Kg per day) the project has developed multi-insect integrated waste upcycling insights.

In the current phase of DOWN, the project support the Unnat Krishi Abhiyan Parishad Samita, Sagar to setup and operate BSF pilot facility at project headquator in Kapuriya village in Sagar.
